green-milk-glass-4

Milk glass has been around since the 16th century, but the term itself was coined in the 20th century to describe the opaque white, pink, and the ever popular green color.

France was the first place milk glass came into vogue, and 19th-century French milk glass is highly collectible today. By the early 1900's, milk glass was a symbol of the style and taste of American households enjoying the fruits of the Gilded Age. These privileged individuals filled their homes with milk glass produced by 19th-century U.S. glass manufacturers.

Milk glass has been in constant production for so long that collectors have many items to choose from. One of the largest producers in the twentieth century was Westmoreland Glass of Grapeville, Pennsylvania; its factory closed in 1985. Only a handful of companies still manufacture milk glass, including the well-known Fenton Art Glass Company of Williamstown, West Virginia.

Prices can range from just a few dollars to several thousand. However, because few American manufacturers marked their glass, it can be difficult to tell when, where, or by whom a piece was made. An old, rare piece of milk glass can fetch several thousand dollars, while a charming hobnailed butter dish can be bought for $10. Some older milk glass contains quantities of lead and will ring like a bell when tapped, and may also display brilliant colors around its edges when held up to the light. But newer milk glass certainly has its selling points: it's plentiful, undervalued, and so sturdy that you can put it in the dishwasher.

At Wishful Living we have reproduction green milk glass available, ranging in price from $10 to $28. Stop in and see our selection! We're open Monday through Saturday in historic downtown Berthoud, Colorado.

Timer candles at Wishful Living

"There is not enough darkness in all the world to put out the light of even one small candle"- Robert Alden

Placing a burning candle in one's window is a common tradition that dates back to colonial times. Candle light often evokes the warmth of home and family. The candle was often placed in the window when a member of the family was away. The lit candle was also placed in the window as a sign of good news or as a beacon to weary travelers. Candles also represented friendship and were seen as a sign of welcome to others. In early America, homes were often miles apart. The sight of a candle in a window from a distance was a sign of "welcome" to those wishing to visit.

At Wishful Living we have "timer" Tapers and Pillars, a battery operated candle that turns itself on for 6 hours, off for 18 hours, and turns itself on again for 6 hours and so on. They are a great addition to any holiday decor, or any time of year.

Stop in and see us in festive Berthoud, Colorado!  We're open daily through Christmas with extended hours.

I have always been the romantic type. I look forward to flowers for special occasions or for no occasion at all!  Flowers are beautiful, so can you blame me?  I started working for Wishful Living in Berthoud, Colorado about a year ago and was surprised to see paper flowers in the store for sale.  They are rich in texture and color, come in various sizes and arrangements and they actually appear to look very real!  The best think about these flowers is they require very minimal dusting.  Many customers comment on how they cannot believe the flowers are not "real".  These flowers will decorate and delight any home.  I now ask my husband to give me paper flowers rather than real flowers.  Come check these pretty flowers out for yourself!

As many of you know this crazy Colorado weather has it's moments of being sunny, snowy and windy all in the month of May. One of the unique items Wishful Living offers for sale are what we refer to as, "pebble pots". They were handmade in Indonesia, as are heavy so they can stand up to the strongest winds. These pots will make for a beautiful display in your yard or garden and won't tip over and damage your pretty flowers during one of our crazy weather moments. Come check out the variety of sizes and shapes we have available!

There are few places left in the modern world where ancient traditions of textile art still thrive. Among these are regions within the Far East, central Asia, and South and Central America.

In Central America the legacy of the ancient Mayans lives on among its descendants. Cotton was an important crop among the early Mayans, essential to the weaving process. Colors derived from mineral and vegetable substances were ground in stone mortars and used to dye the fibers prior to weaving. Along with the early methods of spinning and dyeing, the Mayans perfected a simple technique of weaving still used today.

Dress performs a major function in Mayan culture beyond practicality and protection; it serves to immediately identify one as belonging to a specific tribe or community. A certain headdress, for instance, would signify marital status. Decorative colors and details on a traditional huipil (blouse), would identify a specific village. While some designs have disappeared over time, new ones have been added and many of the motifs found today are from pre-Columbian times. Mayan weaving is a celebration shared between an entire group, and although each village has its own colors and patterns, each work also bears the highly personal touch of the weaver who created it. Contemporary Mayans, like their ancestors produce brightly colored designs rich in history and meaning. Often a single garment takes between two and three months to create. Weaving is a great source of pride for the men and women of Guatemala. Unfortunately, many Mayans have had to give up their weaving heritage for survival reasons.

At Wishful Living, we have an outstanding collection of Guatemalan textiles, huipils, cortes, fajas, and other beautiful hand-loomed works of art. These pieces need to be seen to be appreciated. The amount of hand work on a single piece renders it a piece of art to be displayed and admired. The bright colors and ancient motifs will liven any room and make you smile as bright as the Mayan sun.

Mix it up! The term “eclectic” has come to mean many different things to different people. Eclectic style is not a random mix of furniture, patterns and accessories. Rather, true eclecticism in interior design is largely intentional with a bit of instinct and heart thrown in for good measure. Eclectic style comes together when different time periods and influences work together to create an unconventional whole. Eclectic decor allows you to avoid choosing only one time period or regional theme for your house and instead experiment with a variety of pieces. It might look free and easy, but a room looks “eclectic” and not cluttered when a balance of design styles is used.

Look around your home and see what style of furniture predominates, see what style you gravitate toward most, you might find two equally appealing but contrasting styles. You can use both as part of your eclectic mix. Also, walk through your home and take pictures of all your favorite decorative items: pictures, mirrors, vases, etc. Group the pictures by similar themes, such as modern, Victorian, nature, and the list goes on forever! This will highlight at least one design style to use in your own personal eclectic mix. There is no right or wrong way to decorate in an eclectic style, use what you like and keep a healthy balance.

Winter in Wishful LivingEvery year my family has an unusual tradition of stuffing our family stockings with items such as toothpaste, shaving cream and deodorant.  Those typical items you purchase at the store for everyday use, and those same items that offer little or no excitement to get.  As this holiday season approaches I look forward to filling the family stockings with many more unique items from Wishful Living this year.  I say let's make this a season to remember with unforgettable stocking stuffers, cards and gifts!

Each day is one step closer to the holiday season, and at Wishful Living the preparation has already started.  I am an employee at this amazing store and look forward to coming into work each day to see the new merchandise that will be put out for the holiday season!  As boxes are unwrapped and items tagged, the excitement of the holiday season fills the air.  The employees have been working hard on the calendar for extended holiday hours beginning the day before Thanksgiving!

Wishful Living is an eclectic boutique located in the heart of Berthoud, Colorado next to City Star Brewing at 321 Mountain Avenue.  As you walk into the store, your eyes will dance at the amazing display of merchandise throughout the building.  Each room offering a unique feel and items from an exciting adventure that the owners of the store took to import the merchandise back from various countries such as Indonesia, Bali and Guatemala.

As the countdown to the holidays appears, it is truly a pleasure to talk with each customer coming into the store looking for that perfect gift!  Whether it be jewelry, home décor, furniture or so much more, you are guaranteed to find a special item that no other store carries. Box Signs with amazing sayings, scarves and candles that smell delicious are some of the few items I myself have a hard time resisting the urge to buy.
