Mix it up! The term “eclectic” has come to mean many different things to different people. Eclectic style is not a random mix of furniture, patterns and accessories. Rather, true eclecticism in interior design is largely intentional with a bit of instinct and heart thrown in for good measure. Eclectic style comes together when different time periods and influences work together to create an unconventional whole. Eclectic decor allows you to avoid choosing only one time period or regional theme for your house and instead experiment with a variety of pieces. It might look free and easy, but a room looks “eclectic” and not cluttered when a balance of design styles is used.

Look around your home and see what style of furniture predominates, see what style you gravitate toward most, you might find two equally appealing but contrasting styles. You can use both as part of your eclectic mix. Also, walk through your home and take pictures of all your favorite decorative items: pictures, mirrors, vases, etc. Group the pictures by similar themes, such as modern, Victorian, nature, and the list goes on forever! This will highlight at least one design style to use in your own personal eclectic mix. There is no right or wrong way to decorate in an eclectic style, use what you like and keep a healthy balance.

Why such a name?!  "Mardi" is French for "Fat" and "Gras" is French for "Tuesday".  This holiday has some fun history too!

Mardi Gras originated with pagan Roman Carnival celebrations that took place in mid-February and celebrated the end of winter. It was extended from the Twelfth night after Christmas (January 6) to the day preceding Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. The day before Ash Wednesday, known as Fat Tuesday, is traditionally seen as a last day of revelry before Lent. Mardi Gras has been celebrated in Paris since the Middle Ages with parades and masked balls. The Mardi Gras tradition was exported to America in 1699, when French explorers settled at the mouth of the Mississippi River and established the city of New Orleans. New Orleans remained under French rule for much of the next century.

Since the 1870s, many objects have been tossed from floats. In the 1880s, the King of Carnival (Rex) began throwing inexpensive glass beads on strings to parade goers instead of medallions, the start of a tradition. These beautiful glass beads were grouped with almonds and coated in sugar and thrown along with other confections into the peasant crowds that begged for them on the side of the road. The beads were an instant hit and were soon adopted by all krewes (parade organizers during Carnival) to throw in their parades. Early glass beads were imported from Czechoslovakia or Japan. The first beads were all purple, green, and gold. The meaning of the colors was important: purple for justice, green for faith, and gold for power. However, today you can find beads in all colors and featuring almost anything you can imagine: sports teams, food, flowers, rainbows, animals, smiley faces. Some beads even have flashing lights.

Happy Mardi Gras everyone!

Winter in Wishful LivingEvery year my family has an unusual tradition of stuffing our family stockings with items such as toothpaste, shaving cream and deodorant.  Those typical items you purchase at the store for everyday use, and those same items that offer little or no excitement to get.  As this holiday season approaches I look forward to filling the family stockings with many more unique items from Wishful Living this year.  I say let's make this a season to remember with unforgettable stocking stuffers, cards and gifts!

They say birds fly south for the winter, so rather than missing the sight of beautiful birds during these cold months, I like to decorate my house with unique bird décor found at Wishful Living. I started out decorating my baby girl's room with bird houses made out of vintage barn wood. Then I found beautiful bird pictures to accent her nursery walls and even a metal jewelry holder adorned with birds, which makes a great place to hold cute little head bands.

The desire to have more bird décor in my home blossomed as I found beautiful pillows with embroidered birds for the living room and a metal mantel clock with a bird attached. There are various antique bird cages throughout the store, some of which stand tall and would look great next to my favorite lounging chair. I found a beautiful canvas painting of a bird at Wishful Living, which hangs on the wall near our front door for all to see that enter into our home.

One would think I stopped decorating with birds after both the living room and nursery were finished, however I walked in the store recently to find some more beautiful bird pictures and wooden bird figurines for the kitchen. Who could resist the most adorable clock to hang in the kitchen with vibrant colors and a beautiful bird painted in the center of the clock? Needless to say my house is now filled with so many special bird décor items and I was able to decorate with all of these items as Wishful Living has fantastic prices!

There are many other fabulous bird décor items within the store such as wooden key holders, small jewelry or keepsake boxes and even a beautiful jewelry necklace with a bird house pendant. This store is filled with bird treasures!

As you walk through the store each room holds a variety of special gifts! Looking for a special gift for a friend? You can grab a unique card with birds designed on it. If roosters or owls are more up your alley, don't fret as there are plenty of spectacular items with roosters and owls to complete the décor in your home! It is that time of season when a scarf is a treasured accessory to any outfit and helps to keep you both stylish and warm.  As I walk the streets of Berthoud and pass many trendy ladies wearing scarves, I can't help but think how awesome it is to work at Wishful Living where a variety of scarves are sold for amazing prices to meet the stylish needs of women from all walks of life.
Covered in Scarves

For instance, the Pashmina Scarves in our store are a great buy.  These beautiful scarves come from Nepal.  They are so soft, delicate and come in a variety of colors to choose from.  Whether you chose to dress up an outfit with a bold solid print red scarf or perhaps one with intricate designs, you will be certain to fall in love with these scarves!

Beautiful, soft, woven scarves in a variety of colors come from Guatemala and are available as well.  These scarves are great for tying in various ways whether you chose to braid a scarf on one side or simply warp it around your neck.  There are so many fun colors to choose from, I often have a hard time deciding which scarf to wear for the day.  They are so comfortable and warm.

Wishful Living also offers a variety of light weight summer scarves.  I imagine these scarves would be perfect for tying in your hair.  With fun prints such as roses, dragonflies and butterflies that come in many different colors, these scarves are bound to turn some heads and get you a few compliments.  A wonderful woman came into the store the other day, and said she doesn't feel dressed completely unless she is wearing a scarf with her outfit. Scarves dress up any piece of clothing and add the extra pizazz we all adore.

Perhaps you could purchase a scarf to tie to your bag or luggage?  Does your loveable dog need a scarf to strut his/her stuff while going for a walk in the park? Scarves can also adorn our tables and chairs creating a unique décor for any household.  These beautiful scarves could be hung on a rod in a kitchen window to create a beautiful valance look and let just the right amount of light in.  The possibilities are endless as to what you can do with a scarf!

So as the winter months are approaching us, be sure that you have a few great scarves in your house to wear or decorate with. Come visit us at Wishful Living and see the wide variety of scarves offered throughout the store.  There are so many creative uses for scarves!  What is your favorite way to wear or use a scarf?
